Obituary for Florence E O'Brien

Florence Eileen O' Brien (nee McTernan) , longtime resident of Carmel, NY, passed away on March 18, 2023, following 79 love-filled, adventure-filled years. She was born in the Bronx, NY, where she attended Holy Rosary School and the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. She earned a B. S. in Accounting from Lehman College and worked as a bookkeeper for many years.

In 1970, Eileen married Edward J. O’Brien, and in 1975 they moved to Carmel, NY. They had one daughter, Heather K. O’Brien, and many pets over the years. Eileen dabbled in tennis, bowling, and crafts, but her favorite hobby was shopping. She enjoyed gardening, spending time at the beach, visiting her daughter and granddogs in Baltimore, and exploring new places. Her four siblings were her best friends with whom she spent holidays and weekends, as well as vacations, and many hours on the phone. Eileen was a talker, but also a listener, with lots of good advice to share. In difficult times, she always brought support and optimism. She believed in showing up for the big moments in her family members’ lives. She would do anything for her own mother, and she was the best mom to her only daughter.

Eileen was pre-deceased by her husband Eddie and her sisters Betty, Joan, and Maureen. She is survived by her brother, Thomas McTernan, her daughter Heather, and a wonderful extended family. Eileen appreciated the work of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org), for anyone seeking to make a donation in her honor.
