Before moving to Carmel, Jean worked as a seamstress but soon found a position working in the Carmel school system in addition to making chocolates and knitting garments for the New York theaters. Jean was a smart businesswoman and went on to own two successful businesses. First, she opened and operated a bridal shop in Mahopac and later opened an award-winning ceramics studio, which she ran with her daughter Johanna until the 1980s. Not one to stay retired, Jean continued to stay busy and went on to work with the Alzheimer’s Association, Brewster which eventually led to a new career as a home health aide, assisting the elderly until she was in her 80s.
She was active in her community as a member of the St. James Church Rosary Society, Carmel and participated in the Carmel Fire Department Woman’s Auxiliary group where she organized several knitting groups. These groups crocheted and distributed blankets and clothing to those in the community. They also created beautiful baby caps for the area hospitals and the women also donated their handmade items to the victims of house fires.
Jean was a frequent and ambitious traveler both within the United States and abroad and especially loved Foxwoods Bingo. She loved going to new and exciting places and enjoyed these trips with family to share the experiences.
In later years, Jean made her home with her daughter, Tonya who was her primary caregiver and spent her time surrounded by her loving family and friends.
